Text Compare
Compare two text inputs line-by-line with diff highlighting, whitespace and case toggles.
Text Compare checks two blocks of text against each other line by line and highlights exactly which lines were removed or added, with a status card and line counts as a summary above the inputs. Differences are highlighted in red (removed) and green (added) in either a Side-by-side or an Inline view.
What sets it apart is normalisation before comparing. Ignore Case lowercases both texts, so "Error" and "error" match. Ignore Whitespace collapses every run of spaces, tabs and line breaks into a single space and trims the ends, so re-indented or re-wrapped text compares as equal.
Ignore Whitespace also removes line breaks, which means both texts are compared as one long line. That makes it a quick yes/no check ("is the content the same apart from spacing?"), but if they still differ, the whole text is shown as changed. Turn it off to find the specific lines. With either option on, the diff output shows the normalised text.
For a strict comparison where every space and capital letter counts, use the Diff Checker. If you are comparing API responses or config objects, the JSON compare tool understands structure rather than lines.
- Paste the first version into Text 1 (Original) and the second into Text 2 (Modified).
- Check the Status card: it reads Identical or Different, alongside removed and added line counts.
- Tick Ignore Case and/or Ignore Whitespace if those differences should not count.
- Switch between Side-by-side and Inline to review the highlighted changes.
- Use Swap to reverse the comparison direction, or Clear to start again.
- Line-by-line diff that updates as you type
- Ignore Case option for case-insensitive comparison
- Ignore Whitespace option that collapses spaces, tabs and line breaks
- Identical / Different status with removed and added line counts
- Side-by-side and Inline (+/-) views
- Swap and Clear controls
- Runs entirely in the browser
Case-only difference
Text 1: SELECT * FROM Users Text 2: select * from users Ignore Case off: the line is highlighted as changed Ignore Case on: no differences highlighted
Useful for SQL, HTTP headers or other text where case does not affect meaning.
Re-indented paragraph
Text 1:
The quick brown fox
jumps over the lazy dog.
Text 2:
The quick brown fox jumps
over the lazy dog.
Ignore Whitespace on: no differences highlightedLine breaks, double spaces and indentation are all collapsed before comparing.
Finding an edited line
Text 1: name: api replicas: 2 image: app:1.4 Text 2: name: api replicas: 3 image: app:1.4 Inline: name: api - replicas: 2 + replicas: 3 image: app:1.4
With the options off, only the changed line is highlighted.
Texts that look the same are reported as Different
Invisible differences such as trailing spaces, tabs versus spaces, or a missing final newline.
Enable Ignore Whitespace to confirm, then fix the spacing in the source if you need an exact match.
Too many lines are marked as changed
Small formatting differences (capitalisation or indentation) on many lines.
Turn on Ignore Case, or format both texts the same way before comparing, for example with the SQL formatter for queries.
Accented or special letters still differ with Ignore Case on
Lowercasing does not remove accents, so "é" and "e" remain different characters.
Normalise accents in both texts first if they should be treated as equal.
How is Text Compare different from Diff Checker?
They share the same line diff and view modes. Text Compare adds the Ignore Case and Ignore Whitespace options, an Identical/Different status and per-line counts. The Diff Checker always compares the raw text and counts changed blocks instead of lines.
Why does the whole text turn red and green when Ignore Whitespace is on?
Ignore Whitespace replaces line breaks with spaces, so each input becomes a single line. If anything other than whitespace differs, that single line is marked as changed. Use it to confirm whether two texts match, then switch it off to locate the change.
Why is the diff output in lowercase?
With Ignore Case enabled, the texts are lowercased before comparison and the diff displays that normalised version. Your inputs are not modified; turn the option off to see the original casing.
Does it show which words changed within a line?
No. Changes are reported per line, so an edited line appears once as removed and once as added.
Is my text private?
Yes. The comparison is done in your browser; the text is not uploaded.
